In recent years, there has been an upward trend in falsified results appearing in medical research papers—both as willful fraud and unreliable/irreproducible research. “Research misconduct is certainly more prominent in the media these days,” states Peter Swaan, Ph.D., professor of pharmaceutical sciences at the University of Maryland in Baltimore and editor-in-chief of Pharmaceutical Research. “This does not mean that all scientists commit fraud. It is a small subsection of the scientific community. Fraudulent papers are like crime rates, they go up and down.” Continue reading →

Rmark-arnold-1ecently, proposed revisions to the U.S. Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulation were published in the Federal Register. As part of the updates, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has tried to improve alignment with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) GLPs, particularly with multisite studies, which are more frequently the norm today. Included in the Federal Register publication are not only the proposed changes, but also the background and rationale for the changes and the potential cost of implementation.  Continue reading →

A strong majority of photo_raAmericans (91%) say it is important to develop better medicines for conditions we currently treat, according to a recent public opinion survey commissioned by Research!America. To achieve this, we need scientists; we need resources; and we need sustained support. Both the public and private sectors have crucial roles to play, but over the past decade the federal commitment to research has wavered. The purchasing power of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is just three-quarters of what it was a decade ago. The percentage of grants approved to receiving funding from the NIH have been cut in half compared to 15 years ago; and the average age for an individual’s first NIH grant is 42. Fortunately, champions in Congress are seeking to change this landscape. Continue reading →

Vivek AgrahariPostdoctoral scientists (postdocs) are an important part of the biomedical research system. In general, they have received a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) but are seeking additional research, training and teaching opportunities to prepare themselves for a career as an independent researcher or faculty member at an academic institution. Postdocs are highly efficient at research work, but are mostly underpaid for the experience they have. Continue reading →

Rakesh GollenGrowth in science endeavors is a clear indicator of the growth of a nation, as research and development (R&D) leads to economic growth, employment, and overall social well-being of their citizens. The report Globalization of Science and Engineering, published by the National Science Foundation, summarizes the changes in percentage of worldwide R&D expenditures (combined public and private) by geographical location over the last decade. The report clearly indicates that between 1996 and 2007 the highest investment was made by North America (40%), then Europe (~30%), followed by Asia (~25%), and lastly ~5% is contributed throughout the rest of the world. Remarkably, the trend of total investment into science decreases both in North America and Europe in year 2007, compared to 1996; whereas, it increases in Asia (most growth coming from China and India).
