30 years logo AAPS final_v1In celebration of AAPS’s 30th anniversary today, AAPS Blog Committee members and AAPS staff have developed a list of scientific advances over the past 30 years. What scientific breakthrough of the last 30 years would you add to the list?

1986: The first pharmaceutically relevant protein made in plants was the human growth hormone, which was expressed in transgenic tobacco.

1987: The safety and efficacy of prescription drugs in the U.S. became regulated by the federal Prescription Drug Marketing Act.

1987: The first antiretroviral treatment for AIDS was approved.

1989: Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web.

1989: The first knockout mouse was created, for which Mario R. Capecchi, Martin J. Evans, and Oliver Smithies received The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2007.

1980s: Cancer therapy began being targeted through tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

1990s: Development of PK/PD modeling software such as Gastroplus has made tremendous contributions towards clinical predictions.

1992: Green fluorescent protein began being used a tool in molecular biology.

1994: The first monoclonal antibody therapy, Abciximab, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

1994: The first genetically engineered food for human consumption, the Flvr Savr tomato, was approved by the FDA.

1995: The first Bose–Einstein condensates were created.

1995: The Biopharmaceutics Classification System was first idealized.

1996: Dolly the sheep was born—the first mammal to be successfully cloned from an adult cell.

1997: Lipinski’s rule of Five was formulated.

1998: RNA interference was discovered, leading to the 2006 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine going to Andrew Fire and Craig C. Mello.

Late 1990s through early 2000s: Advancements in bioinformatics and biostatistics changed understanding of disease progression through genes.

2003: The Human Genome Project was completed.

2006: Stem cell programming/reprogramming became possible when scientists discovered how to extract embryonic stem cells without destroying the embryo.

2006: Induced pluripotent stem cells were first generated, leading to regenerative medicine therapies.

2006: The epigenetic treatment of cancer cells was first approved by the FDA in the form of vorinostat.

2008: Water was first “tasted” on Mars, meaning conditions for life may have been possible at some point throughout Mars’s history.

2009: Phase 1 clinical trials for the use of human embryonic stem cells to treat spinal cord injuries was approved by the FDA.

2010: The first therapeutic cancer vaccine, Provenge, was approved by FDA.

2012: CRISPR was first used as a genome engineering tool in human cell cultures.

2012: 3D printing began being used in industry.

2015: The first reusable launch system for launching payloads into space more than once was created.

2015: The first new antibiotic in 30 years was created from dirt.

2016: Elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 were formally recognized by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
