Meghan Gerardo-finalDo you remember the days when your high school science class was filled with paper labs or instruments that students now would call ancient? Maybe computers were non-existent, or the screen was black with green text. Did you ever imagine a day when K–12 students would learn about infectious diseases through video game design? That day is here.

The AAPS Foundation’s newly-developed Teach the Teacher program, with support from the AAPS SPOD Committee, has created a unique opportunity for K–12 students to learn about pharmaceutical sciences. Throughout the 2014–2015 calendar school year, the Foundation and SPOD committee worked with Connolly High School in Pflugerville, Texas, to provide 15 at-risk high school students the opportunity to collaborate with AAPS members from all over the country. Together they created a pharmaceutical science-driven video game to simulate discovering a cure for an epidemic.

This week on the blog, we are excited to introduce “The Week of the Foundation.” We hope you’ll take a minute to read about the creation of the video game, the impact it made on both high school students and AAPS members, and why programs like these are so imperative to K–12 students.
